The Floating Piers: What is it?

The Floating Piers is a temporary installation on the Iseo Lake in the North of Italy near the city of Brescia.
It is a floating bridge built on the water of the lake by the famous bulgarian-US artist Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude. The bridge connects Montisola with the mainland.

The floating bridge on the Iseo Lake is open every day 24 hours a day from the 18th of June to the 3th of July 2016. How crowded is to visit the Floating Piers?

We went to the floating bridge on the Iseo Lake in the day of the inauguration and it was very crowded.
So we can confirm that the Floating Piers can be very packet during daytime and the weekends. The access to the bridge from the town of Sulzano is more congested, but early in the morning it is possible to avoid the peak of the visits.

How to reach the floating Piers?

The floating bridge on the Iseo Lake can be reached in several ways, by bus, by train or with the ferry. There are direct connections from the main airports of the noth of Italy and also from some town of the Franciacorta reagion that is a close area famous for the wineyard.
For the event several trains from Brescia to Sulzano have been activated. Another option is to reach the towns of Paratico or Sarnico by car and the take the Ferry to Montisola, direction Sensole and travel on the floating bridge from the opposite side.

How does it work a visit to the floating bridge of Montisola?

Is it possible to have access to the Floating Piers from the town of Sensole on Montisola and to reach the Island of San Paolo. From here you can go to the town of Peschiera Maraglio and the proceed towards the stretch that connects Montisola with the mainland in Sulzano.
We do not recommend to exit from the floating bridge in Sulzano because if you want to come back you have to get in line again and there, the lines can take more that two hours.

We decided to cover the path starting from Sensole instead of arriving to the main gate in Sulzano. So we arrived in Paratico by car and we took the ferry from Sarnico to Sensole on the island of Montisola. Thanks to this we get less crowd.

We suggest to book the ferry for the Floating Piers online at least 3 days before. This will let you partially avoid the line  from the pier of Sarnico, because approximately the 70% of the boat is reserved for those who have booked in advance.

The trip on the ferry from Sarnico to Montisola lasts about 35 minutes.

Where to park the car to go to the Floating Piers?

we parked in the small town of Paratico, near the LIdL supermarket where there are free parking areas. This parking are near the lakeside promenade that lead to Sarnico where is the pier of the ferry. From there there are several ferries directed to the town of Sensole on the island of Montisola.

Is there some fee to walk on the Floating Piers on the Iseo Lake?

No, there are no fees to access to the floating bridge on the Iseo Lake, but you have to pay the ferries if you get there with them (about 9€ for the roundtrip).

Can I go on the Floating Piers if I suffer from vertigo?

I suffer from vertigo but I have not experienced any problem to walk on the floating bridge, probably because there is so crowd that I have not perceived the void. The waggle is also almost unperceivable if the weather condition are good.

Where I can eat near the Floating Piers?

It is not allowed to eat on the bridge, but in Montisola there are several snack bars and restaurants to have a rest. There are also street food stands very cheap.
In Montisola there is also a picnic area where is it possible to have a packed lunch if you prefer.

Other information to see the floating bridge over the Iseo Lake?

Is it possible to go to the Floating Piers with the strollers and families with small children can access to special fast tracks to have access from the city of Sulzano. From Sensole and Montisola there are no gates.

In case of bad weather, the Floating Piers could not be accessible for all its length, but based on the lake condition the access could be reduced to the first 400 meters from the mainland.

Some curiosity about the floating bridge – The Floating Piers?

The bridge on the Iseo lake is 4 kilometers long and a half and has a width of 16 meters, but only 8 in the middle should be walkable. Actually as you can see from the pictures there is a lot of tolerance and basically it is forbidden only to stand less that two meters from the borders.

Last, but not least: Leave you stilettoes at home (they are not allowed)Instead…walk barefoot as suggested by the inventor Christo… The experience is amazing and you’ll never forget it!
