Langhe and Roero is an area in Piedmont Region – in the North of Italy – that we love and where we like to come back there every time we can. Roberto – the Dad – was born there and when we go there we always try to know a new part of this area of Piedmont, which provides very much in terms of food and wine (and not only).
Before having a child we focused on romantic villages and wineries because the Langhe is known as “Langhe Wine Region” of Italy because of the wine production of red wines (the most famous wine is called “Barolo“). Since our “Patato” – our little boy – is born our holidays in Langhe and Roero are (also) “suitable for a child”.
So today we try to give you some ideas if you would like to spend a few days in the Langhe and Roero with children because in our opinion this region is perfect to organize an holiday in Italy with kids!

Things to do in Langhe and Roero: The Museums of the Langhe and Roero for children
In the Langhe and Roero there are some museums dedicated to the children, but also workshops and activities organized expecially for the young visitors.
Among the many, the Museum of Magic (“Museo della Magia”) in Cherasco is a must. Here you will be able to discover the secrets of the great magicians and children can attend a real live magic show! A part of the ticket is devolved to support projects that aims to aid world’s children in difficulty. That is because the Mago Sales – aka Don Silvio, a Salesian missionary – supports those projects with its foundation.
Another museum dedicated to children that will delight even the parents is the Toy Museum (“Museo del Giocattolo) in Bra. In this museum you can see ancient toys used by kids over the ages. It is open to visitors only on Sundays and the tour is guided.
The Museum of Archaeology and Natural Science in Alba is not dedicated to children but provides laboratories with a historical theme and nature dedecated to young visitors.
Things to do in Langhe in summertime with kids: A refreshing dip
Piedmont region is summertime is quite hot so if you come in the Langhe and Roero with kids in the summer maybe you could be attacked by the desire to a nice dip.
One possibility in this case is to spend a day in one of the centers equipped with swimming pools there are in these parts. I suggest you two: the Water Park called “Le Cupole” in Cavallermaggiore and the swimming pool called “Le Piscine” in Piobesi d’Alba. Both these water park are not far from Alba in the Langhe.
A good alternative, of course, is to take the car and go for a trip to the Ligurian Sea that is not far. It will take an hour and a half to reach the nearest sea in Liguria Region!
Things to do in Langhe and Roero: nature and parks of Langhe Wine Region
If you like to spend the holidays in the middle of nature, Langhe and Roero are a perfect destination. Many farms offer the chance to walk in the vineyards and the hills, hire a horse or rent bikes. I recommend to contact the association called “Fuori Traccia”, that organizes hiking and cycling in the area of the Alta Langa and Roero, and even activities and workshops for children.
If you are looking for a place to take over a picnic as well as a hike in the nature, the Roero Forest Park in the municipality of Sommariva Perno has areas that are already equipped with barbeque, toilets and playground.
Finally, if you are in Alba and you do not have a car, you can spend some times walking or riding a bike along the recently renovated riverfront of Tanaro river. It can be a good idea to relax a little bit.
Things to do in Langhe: Castles and small villages
The Langhe and Roero hills are dotted with small picturesque villages with a castle at the top. Many castles organize activities with children as Serralunga d’Alba, Barolo and Govone, however. These three are amazing castles in Langhe and Roero area and you have to check the schedule of the activities on their website.
The small village of Montelupo Albese has instead started in 2011 a particular tradition, painting the walls of houses with scenes from the most famous fairy tales where the protagonist is the wolf. Walking through the old houses your children will meet Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs, the Wolf of Gubbio and many more! Meanwhile you will enjoy the beautiful panorama of the countryside.
Two small very beautiful villages in Langhe Wine Region are Mango and Neive: both are lovely and worth a visit! In this post you can find more information about what to see in the Langhe.
