The surroundings of Rimini: Santarcangelo di Romagna

Rimini is a well known touristic location in Emilia Romagna region, famous for its sea and cuisine. But not far from Rimini there are many small town and village where is a pleasure speding some time during an holiday in Italy.

In particular we liked a lot one of them named Santarcangelo di Romagna, famous also for being the birthplace of two italian poets: Tonino Guerra and Nino Pedretti .

The old town is worth a visit by itself, with its narrow streets that climb up on top of the hill called “Monte Giove” (Giove Hill) where you can enjoy both a beautiful view over the city and the poems written on the corners of the houses.

Overall there are two main reasons to visit this Santarcangelo di Romagna: the Tufa Caves and the Museum of Button.

The Caves are a huge network of tunnels and rooms that runs through the subsoil of Santarcangelo on different levels, reaching up to the mountain.

The origin of these caves is still partially a mystery, but over the centuries they has been used as a warehouse, cellar and also as a shelter during the Second World War.

Today it is possible to visit them by participating in a guided tour also suitable for children and very interesting for all people.

In December in order to celebrated Christmas Times the visit is even more special because inside tunnels is set up a crib that will capture the attention of children and adults.

The second reason to visit Santarcangelo with children is the Museum of Buttons. Born from the desire of its founder, Mister Giorgio Gallavotti, the museum is able to follow the story through this small object, making visitors discover the importance it has had over the centuries .

The buttons have thousands of different shapes and colours and are made by different materials and the museum staff will tell you the all the functions and anecdotes about them: buttons made from nut shells and other valuables such as jewelry, buttons of kings and queens and small buttons made in the shape of… groceries !

In short, a trip to do all together to discover something special about the inland of Rimini in every seasons! 🙂
