There are places that are a treasure of colors and Ravenna is one of them. Ravenna has a well-kept historic center but also immense treasures, which once again remind that there is more than one reason to organize a holiday in Italy. The treasures of this city are mosaics, a sort of ancient “books” that were used to teach stories and lessons to the common people in Roman Times.
Ravenna Mosaics have the colors of the rainbow and are kept in solid and impressive structures: the “Museo di San Vitale” (Museum of San Vitale), the “Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo” (Church of Saint Apollinare the New), the “Mausoleo di Galla Placidia” (Mausoleum of Galla Placidia), the “Battistero Neoniano” (Baptistery of Neon) and the “Cappella di Sant’Andrea” (Chapel of St. Andrew).
Ravenna mosaics are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites that their beauty make open-mouthed both adults and children.
Here I’ll tell you my loved ones. First of all the stars of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, enclosed in a small, simple-looking building. This mosaic of Ravenna is able to hit the imagination of visitors with their perfection. The second Ravenna mosaic that I love is the parades of Justinian and Theodora at the Basilica of San Vitale. This mosaic allows the viewer to imagine how he could be the life of the times’ empire and it’s really amazing.
Another of the ravenna mosaics that impressed me is the scene of the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. This mosaic is preserved in Neonian Baptistery, one of the oldest monuments of Ravenna dating from the fourth century and I love it for the accuracy with which it is represented. This is for suce a sign of craftsmanship but also its related I think to the passion the master craftsmen who made it.
An other impressive Ravenna mosaic is located in St. Apollinaris the New. The great mosaic that reproduces the Palace of Theodoric, with its white curtains draped and red roofs is impressive. In this mosaic colors are still so vivid despite the passing of the centuries and make you do a leap in the past.
Among the beautiful Ravenna mosaics located in Saint Apollinaris the New another amazing masterpiece is the representation of the Harbour of Classe: in this mosaic boats are suspended in the blue and city walls, enclosed in the buildings of the ancient city, are incredible.
In my opinion Ravenna mosaics give to the traveler the chance to have a look to the past and make and their beauty is the able to attract the attention of anyone, including kids.
These masterpiece created for educational purposes centuries ago today still continue to speak to the hearts of those who observe them so I think that Ravenna can be an interesting destination for a holiday with kids, in order to bring them closer to art and history with – apparent – simplicity.
